Think of the company you work for and remember how much energy you spent, only in the last month (or the others spent with/on you) because your employees didn’t report something, didn’t transmit information, didn’t give feedback regarding a certain situation, etc. If we extend the concept to the Sales Force and we refer to everybody involved in sales, no matter the department, considering only last month, wasn’t there a waste of energy, time and money due to errors in formal communication? Why does this happen? Should the company activity be destructive in this regard?
I.The world of numbers in sales is fascinating in itself. Their dynamics from simple to complex for an individual or for a group send a message. They tell the truth even if you like it or not and all you have to do is interpret them. Accepting them is up to the Sales Manager’s maturity. I, for one, am obsessed with statistics. I believe that numbers never lie and the reason for distortions is only as a result of human subjectivism and the way we interpret them. They are part of our life. We only have to take them as they are and use them to make good decisions for sales development. Sales indicators are part of sales management. Everything is confusing until we define them and use them for making decisions.II.Although, at first sight, Sales Reports might seem part of the Informational Subsystem, I’d rather discuss them as part of the Indicators Subsystem because I believe they represent the materialization of sales indicators. They also appear in the Informational Subsystem (their purpose is to offer information), but I only see the connection with the Indicators Subsystem as a real possibility to develop them. Only through Sales Reports can we appreciate the indicators , may them be accepted or performance ones. Why would we do them if not like this?
I.PLANNING SUBSYSTEMLet’s give the sales team the Sales Plan and the Standard sales offer (that one about “we are the only ones who….”) and then we can see their power! Besides being a test for the Sales manager’s vision, it is also a “contract of responsibility. It is a responsibility he takes in front of the company’s owner and the sales people: “Follow me and you will be well off because I know what is best for you!” It would be enough to respect the Sales manager. The beauty of this job is in more than just the responsibility part. There are also clients, suppliers, employees in general, and managers of other departments especially you also declare responsibility to. Having said this , I find they deserve more respect and should receive it more often and unconditionally.II.SALES ANALYSIS SUBSYSTEMI do not separate this subsystem in the sales system concept because I believe it is completely interdependent with the Planning Subsystem. I can’t believe others plan not using numbers, in other words, I believe these two systems are connected. Analysis is crucial to planning and planning is crucial to analysis. They are meant to be together.
I.MEETINGS SUBSYSTEM - Although life in sales is a constant fight on the market and with the self, sales are still a fascinating domain which makes you do everything you naturally (talk to jerks, arrogant and rude people, smile continuously regardless of your mood, stay focused for long time periods every day, fight every day to reach your goal, etc.). This is the reason I believe sales people are not normal people, in a good way because they have self control, self motivation, self improvement, etc. They are still people, after all, with feelings and emotions. We need a customized educational method for our team. Maybe some of them are very good personally and professionally. Also, some of them may have native qualities helping them in this field of activity but even the best are still people regardless of their talents. In life, it is obvious that without continuous personal and professional improvement , withoutcontinuous learning, sooner or later we stagnate and then, inevitably regress. Something we once learned is not enough for our entire life. The first signs of it are arrogance, vanity, or obsessive retelling of older success stories! These sales people, who are very good in sales are a minority. A problem the Sales Manager faces regardless of the company size is most of the sales people on his team, and especially the new generation. These young people who turn to sales (and they are becoming fewer by the day!) reflect a general state: no moral values, no ethics, and superficial thinking. Their culture, civilization and trening are lacking. If this is what we are dealing with, as Sales Managers: we step aside and let things happen by themselves, depending on the market evolution or the owner’s good will, or we pick up another job; on the other hand, we can seriously educate them and get support for our initiative to personally and professionally help people who need success in their life. This is the most frequent mistake when controlling: the lack of control instruments. It isn’t normal for you to believe you can remember everything. To forget is a normal process and rather necessary, too. How can you control without writing down things to help you? I mean no disrespect but it is menas you are superficial! You only control in a way that is questionable, eventually!
